MoneyTree says the venture capital industry invested $74.1 million in Missouri last year, up from $21.5 million in 2012. That means Missouri attracted 0.25 percent of the $29 billion that was invested nationwide, and 6.7 percent of the $1.1 billion that was invested in the Midwest. California gets about half of all U.S. venture capital investment.
Venture capital funds invested $25 million in 13 St. Louis companies during the fourth quarter of 2013, the MoneyTree report says, the biggest quarter for early-stage investing in the metro area in more than two years. The largest St. Louis investment reported by a venture capital firm during the fourth quarter was $10 million inNorse, which sells security software. The next three largest local investments were all in medical companies.
