1Week KC Brings New Events For Year Three

One Week KCWhen Adam Coomes talks about 1Week KC, he thinks back on forging his own connections in the entrepreneurial community with the inception of his start-up Infegy.

Now Coomes creates those connections for other entrepreneurs by serving as one of the lead organizers for 1Week KC. 1Week KC was started in 2012 out of the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce’s Big 5 Initiative goal of making Kansas City “America’s Most Entrepreneurial City.” Entering its third year, 1Week KC strives to celebrate and bring together the city’s entrepreneurial community through various events like Entrepreneur Day at the K, a networking meetup at Kauffman Stadium, and this year’s still-under-wraps kickoff event for 1Week KC, the Startup Games.

“This is a personal passion of mine,” Coomes said. “A lot of it was trying to create the scene that I didn’t have when I first started.”

Coomes says this year, unlike past years, they will be focusing more on creating an environment where “random collisions” are more likely to happen, rather than simply scheduling events.

He emphasized the importance of building a community and a week based on natural connections, rather than one focused on event attendence.

“We’re creating fun opportunities for entrepreneurs to network, bond and celebrate,” Coomes said.

Coomes said the event he is most excited for this year is the one he is planning: Startup Party. Modeled off of a South by Southwest theme, the party will take place downtown at Mosaic in the Power and Light District and allow attendees to talk and create the connections Coomes believes are so vital to the entrepreneur community.

Coomes says he is hopeful this year will see an even higher growth rate than from year one to year two, and that eventually, a startup week won’t be needed to create a strong community.
