St. Louis startups raised $19.1 million in 25 venture capital deals during the first half of 2014, short of what officials expected after last year’s record VC haul.

Approximately $16 million went to 23 deals with technology and biotechnology firms, and two other firms received $3.1 million in funding.

“It was slow,” said Jay DeLong, vice president for new ventures and capital formation with the St. Louis Regional Chamber. “Most of our startups are funded right now, but I think a lot more companies will be looking for funding starting in the fall.”

Investors have poured an additional $82 million into 10 companies in July, most of which came from Lumeris’ $71 million raise.

St. Louis-area startups raised more than $380 million in 2013, more than six times the amount they raised in 2012. More than $250 million of that came in the second half of last year.
