The director of operations for Capital Innovators said the downtown St. Louis accelerator has set a record for most applications filed by startup tech companies in a single application period. Twice a year, Capital Innovators invests $50,000 in five or six tech companies in exchange for an equity stake, and winners from this round are expected to be announced in mid-September.
Scott Bernstein, director of operations for Capital Innovators, said of more than 200 applications, about 20 percent came from St. Louis, with the rest coming from outside of the city or country. International applications accounted for about 20 percent of the overall applications, too.
Bernstein said he wouldn’t be surprised if more companies from out of town were included among this year’s batch of startups and hinted that Capital Innovators could accept its first International startup into the program.
