St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay said his city plans to become a destination for tech entrepreneurs, and he believes raising the minimum wage is a key part of that process.
Slay, who recently approved a measure to increase St. Louis’ minimum wage to $11 per hour by 2018, spoke Thursday at the annual Governor’s Conference on Economic Development held in St. Louis. He said the higher wage floor is necessary to “attract the best workforce” to the city.
The event also featured executives from companies including Monsanto, Centene and Edward Jones.
Monsanto CEO Hugh Grant, whose company, during failed buyout negotiations with Swiss rival Syngenta, expressed a willingness to relocate its legal headquarters overseas, said Monsanto is “here to stay” and hiring.
