Missouri’s 2019 budget to be handled by newcomers

Missouri’s $28 billion budget for next year will be handled by newcomers on the House and Senate budget committees.

Rep. Scott Fitzpatrick, selected by Gov. Mike Parson to serve as the next state treasurer, served as the chairman of the House Budget Committee for the past two years. His replacement on the budget committee will be Rep. Cody Smith, R-Jasper.

The Senate’s new appropriations chief will be Sen. Dan Hegeman, R-Cosby.

The leadership switches come as state revenues are in flux. The state net general revenue collections for November 2018 decreased 9.1 percent compared with November 2017, the state budget director said earlier this month.

Federal and state tax cuts will be also be on the table for the new officials. Starting Jan. 1, most Missourians’ income tax rate will drop from 5.9 percent to 5.4 percent. The next legislative session begins Jan. 9.
