Parson signs Missouri budget for the new fiscal year

Gov. Mike Parson signed a $35 billion spending plan for the new fiscal year, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. He cut more than $11 million in spending as revenue collections lag due to the economic slowdown during the pandemic.

Parson’s administration restricted an additional $448 million in spending to balance the state’s fiscal 2021 budget.

Parson said some of the withheld money could be released if revenue collections improve in the fiscal year 2021, which begins on July 1.

The withheld amounts span state government, including cuts to four-year higher education institutions and money for the investigation of “gray market gaming machines.”

An estimated 300 state employees face layoffs, with 200 of them in the Department of Social Services and 30 in the Department of Mental Health.
