Legislative committee OKs union paycheck protection

Unions would be required to obtain annual written permission from public workers for payroll deductions for union membership dues or political contributions under a bill endorsed Monday by a legislative committee.

Members of the House Workforce Standards and Development Committee sent the paycheck protection measure to the full House on an 8-2 vote.

The measure, sponsored by Rep. Holly Rehder, comes a year after the Republican-controlled Legislature sent a “right to work” measure to Gov. Jay Nixon’s desk. Nixon vetoed that plan, which would have prohibited requiring union membership as a condition of employment. The General Assembly failed to override the veto.
