Missouri Senate passes $27.2 billion budget

The Missouri Senate passed the major pieces of a $27.2 billion state budget Thursday, which is much earlier in the legislative year than normal.

The speed came because Republican lawmakers want the bill to hit Gov. Jay Nixon’s desk early enough that he will have to sign or veto it before the 2016 session ends, giving lawmakers the chance to override any vetoes without having to wait until September.

The passed version of the budget would restore most of the funding cuts made in the House that targeted the University of Missouri system.
