At GOP debate, gubernatorial candidates differ on Trump support

All four Missouri Republican candidates for governor said during a debate Monday night that they would support presumptive GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump, but only Catherine Hanaway and John Brunner said they would campaign with Trump.

Trump, the real estate mogul and television personality turned presidential candidate, was one of the leading topics of debate Monday in Maryland Heights. The event also covered subjects on which all four candidates agreed — like the need for “right to work” legislation and lower taxes.

Each candidate took time to tout his or her unique qualifications. Brunner, the St. Louis businessman, emphasized his business background. Hanaway, the attorney and former house speaker, hammered home a law-and-order theme. Eric Greitens, a former Navy SEAL and nonprofit leader, touted his outsider status. Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder underlined the fact that he can win statewide elections.
