Chris Koster, the Democratic candidate for governor, said Tuesday he is canceling negotiations about a second debate until Republican opponent Eric Greitens releases his tax returns.
Koster, who released income tax returns for 2012 through 2015 last week, is giving Greitens until Thursday to make detailed personal financial information public, saying it is an “absolute condition” of further debate talks.
Polls show Koster with a lead over Greitens in the run-up to the Nov. 8 election. Traditionally, front-runners are loathe to schedule debates on the premise that the forums only provide challengers more exposure.
In a letter in response, Chambers said Koster’s ultimatum was an “excuse to hide from the people.”
The Greitens campaign has sent mixed messages on whether it would release the former Navy SEAL’s tax returns. Chambers’ letter Tuesday made no mention of a plan to release the documents.
