Republican U.S. Sen. Roy Blunt and a handful of local Democrats in attendance at a GOP event Saturday in Springfield seemed ready for the possibility of a Senate-related campaign announcement from Missouri Attorney General Josh Hawley.
But Hawley himself would not confirm the rampant speculation that he might challenge Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill in 2018.
Hawley has been heavily recruited by prominent Republicans who want to see him run.
In Hawley’s speech, he talked about recent raids at Springfield massage parlors connected to a suspected sex trafficking ring, as well as his office’s lawsuits against pharmaceutical companies that manufacture painkillers and against federal regulations.
Asked afterward whether he was ready to announce a Senate campaign, Hawley laughed and shook his head.
