Greitens appointees subject of Senate debate in Wednesday night marathon

Several of Gov. Eric Greitens’ appointees to various state panels were bottle-necked in the Missouri Senate on Wednesday night, with a bipartisan coalition of senators eating up debate time and airing grievances.

Because Greitens made several appointments during the legislative off season, lawmakers had one month to approve those nominations when they returned to the Capitol on Jan. 3. Some of the most controversial were saved for last.

Senators approved Greitens’ appointment of Tim Noonan to the Missouri Veterans Commission late Wednesday night after some debate. He and others were named to the commission in December amid revelations of resident mistreatment at the St. Louis Veterans Home.

Senators also approved the nomination of J. Benton Hurst to the Clean Water Commission after lengthy debate. Hurst works for the GOP-connected Graves Garrett law firm.

Also Wednesday night, Greitens attempted to withdraw three of his nominations to the Missouri Housing Development Commission in a probable attempt to avoid turbulence on the Senate floor. A bipartisan coalition of senators resisted the move.
