Missouri Attorney General Josh Hawley has launched an inquiry into Gov. Eric Greitens’ veterans charity, The Mission Continues. The move pits Hawley, a U.S. Senate candidate backed by a number of prominent Missouri Republicans, against the Republican Greitens, who is already contending with an unrelated felony indictment.
Hawley’s office opened its investigation into the charity the same day it concluded a probe into the use of a disappearing messaging app by Greitens’ administration, finding no wrongdoing.
The attorney general’s office is investigating the charity “pursuant to its enforcement responsibilities under the consumer protection and charitable registration and reporting laws,” according to a spokeswoman for Hawley.
The inquiry follows a report that a member of Greitens’ staff sent the charity’s donor list to his gubernatorial campaign in 2015. The governor has denied using the list for fundraising.
