Columbia needs new revenue streams, city manager says

Columbia is Missouri’s fastest-growing city, but it has the lowest property tax rate among the state’s 10 most populous cities, according to Columbia City Manager Mike Matthes. That will challenge the city’s ability to provide services to its citizens, Matthes said in Columbia’s annual State of the City address.

“Our residents should expect less service from the city government in future years,” Matthes said Friday.

Matthes opposes relying on sales tax and has advocated for finding alternative revenue streams, like taxing internet sales or raising the property tax.

In November, Columbia voters rejected a use tax that would have applied to internet sales.
