St. Louis County ‘bans the box’ to help ex-offenders find work

Add St. Louis County to the list of local governments that have opted to “ban the box.”

The county will no longer ask job applicants about criminal history on initial employment applications.

St. Louis County Executive Steve Stenger announced the executive order Monday.

The order doesn’t prevent criminal background checks of prospective employees, but it removes criminal history questions from job applications.

Proponents of the policy say it removes a barrier to employment for ex-offenders.

St. Louis adopted a similar policy in 2014, and Missouri instituted one in 2016.
