Missouri regulators rejected a plan to expand a cattle feedlot and slaughter operation near Lone Jack, reversing previous state approval and setting off celebration among neighbors of the proposed lot, including Powell Gardens.
Valley Oaks Stake Co. wanted to expand its operation in Jackson County from fewer than 999 beef cattle to as many as 6,999. Some said the expansion would increase the supply of locally sourced food in Kansas City, but neighbors fought the plan aggressively.
Despite Monday’s decision by the Missouri Clean Water Commission, the regulatory fight could continue. An attorney for Powell Gardens said Monday that Valley Oaks could take the case to an appellate court, and the company has already submitted another permit application.
