KC streetcar sees annual ridership increase, faces federal funding uncertainty

Kansas City Streetcar ridership in 2018 increased by 2.6 percent over the previous year. The transportation service attracted about 55,000 more riders last year than in 2017. Overall, 5.5 million people have used the streetcar since it opened in 2016.

City officials have plans to extend the 2.2-mile line to popular locations including the riverfront and the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

However, the Streetcar Authority hopes to use $151 million in federal funding to complete an expansion to UMKC, and streetcar officials have expressed concern that the government shutdown could delay approval of federal funding.

Two more streetcars are expected to debut this summer, bringing the total to six.
