Sporting goods retailer Johnny Mac’s shuttering stores after sale to Texas company

After 50-plus years in business, St. Louis-based Johnny Mac’s Sporting Goods is shutting its doors and selling off a part of its operation.

Texas-based sports retailer BSN Sports will acquire Johnny Mac’s team sports division, which supplied sports equipment to schools and teams, the company announced Tuesday.

The deal will shutter all nine Johnny Mac’s stores in Missouri, Illinois, and Michigan, including five in the St. Louis area. The closures will impact about 150 retail workers, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

While the company’s retail stores are selling off all remaining merchandise, it has stopped taking new online orders, according to the company’s website Tuesday.

As part of the sale, BSN will absorb 65 full-time sales and support staff at Johnny Mac’s, according to the company.

“With the addition of Johnny Mac’s team division, we have now added over 200 sales professionals in the last twelve months,” BSN Sports President Terry Babilla said in the release.
