A 1943 era DC-3 airplane came in for a smooth and permanent landing just after sunrise this morning on the city’s West Side.
It took months of planning and a crew of about 30 people for the engineering feat that mounted the plane on a “runway” atop the Roasterie coffee company’s headquarters at 1204 W. 27th St. A parking lot across the street began filling with gawkers before dawn, cameras and cell phones snapping away as the nose of the plane finally rose above the building.
“Woohoo. Isn’t she beautiful?,” said Danny O’Neill, founder of the Roasterie, who first got the idea of using a real DC-3 on the coffee roasting plant nearly two decades ago. “It is symbolic of how we roast our coffee – air roasted – and it will be an icon. She looks so cute and chubby.”
The DC-3 feature is part of a $5 million expansion for the Roasterie’s headquarters that will include a new and expanded café, event space and cupping room, where custom blends are developed and sampled.
