Company making furniture from ocean plastic to open KC showroom

A company that turns ocean waste into outdoor furniture is coming to Kansas City, the Kansas City Business Journal reports. Yardbird says it makes furniture sets from 100% recyclable materials and re-purposed ocean plastics.

The company started in Minneapolis and is expanding to Kansas City, which Yardbird says is one of its top markets.

The new showroom will feature 11 different collections, ranging from fire pit tables to sofas.

Yardbird co-owner Jay Dillon chose to focus on sustainability after his experience living in Hong Kong. Dillon noticed he was ordering thousands of pounds of plastic, yet his wife wouldn’t swim in the ocean because of the debris.

Yardbird says it repurposed more than 92,000 pounds of ocean plastic in its furniture last year.

The new showroom will open this month in Overland Park, Kansas.
