Supermarket chain Hy-Vee will limit meat purchases due to concerns about shortages during the COVID-19 pandemic, KMBC reports.
This change took effect Wednesday, with customers being limited to four packages of meat.
The shortage of meat comes from shutdowns of meat processing plants due to coronavirus outbreaks, and from increased demand.
With consumers cooking more at home, meat sales have increased 41% year-over-year for the week ended April 25, the Wall Street Journal reports.
Along with increased demand, close to 20 major meatpacking plants have temporarily shut down due to coronavirus outbreaks.
Hy-Vee’s new rules will affect the Iowa-based chain’s 30 stores in Missouri.
