Nearly 2,000 Kansas City hotel employees have lost their jobs due to the COVID-19 pandemic, KCUR reports.
The Westin Crown Center Hotel and the Sheraton Crown Center Hotel laid off, furloughed or reduced the hours of nearly 500 total employees.
The Marriott Corporation manages both hotels. The company said the actions were temporary and began in March.
The two hotels lost a large portion of their business from canceled meetings and conventions due to stay-at-home orders and reduced travel. A total of 96 canceled meetings and conventions cost the city $162 million in economic impact, according to the local convention and visitors association.
“It’s something we’re all going through,” Kevin Pistilli, president of the Rafael Hotel Group president, told KCUR. “We’ll come back. We just don’t know when.”
