KC mayor proposes decriminalizing marijuana possession

Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas has proposed decriminalizing the possession of marijuana in the city, the Kansas City Star reports.

Currently, those in possession of under 35 grams are issued a $25 fine. The Kansas City Council hopes that this new ordinance will improve the black community’s relationship with law enforcement.

The American Civil Liberties Union reports that black people are 3.6 times more likely to be arrested for cannabis-related charges, though usage is similar among white people.

Soon, Missouri will be selling legal cannabis through licensed medical marijuana facilities. Lucas said he supports Missouri’s opportunity for this new business venture.
