Ameren Missouri began upgrading electric meters in St. Charles as part of a plan to upgrade 1.2 million electric meters in their service area.
The smart meters will allow Ameren to identify if a location has lost power and fix it faster, according to a press release. They will also allow customers to pay less during off-peak hours when demand for energy is low.
The new technology can help residents monitor power usage and make decisions about how to use energy more efficiently.
The upgrades are part of the firm’s Smart Energy Plan that will invest $7.6 billion in grid modernization. Ameren plans to install 120,000 smart meters in St. Charles County and then expand into St. Louis and other regions of the state.
