Lifeguard shortage forces some St. Louis pools to remain closed

City pools in St. Louis are struggling to find enough lifeguards to staff them, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. The St. Louis Parks and Recreation Department has about half as many lifeguards as it would like.

Normally, the city opens its pools during Memorial Day weekend, but many are still closed or have shortened hours.

St. Louis County pools have managed to hire enough staff but still found recruiting tricky. One St. Louis County official believes their advantage comes from the county pools being open last summer but not the city pools. St. Charles has not experienced hiring problems and was also open last summer.

The St. Louis City Parks Director says people want to go to the pool, but due to the shortage, some pools remain closed indefinitely.
