The census released some new numbers last week showing how the recession and sluggish recovery have played out in paychecks around St. Louis.
The short version? Poorly.
From 2007 to 2011, median household income here fell 10 percent, adjusted for inflation, to $51,164. A closer look shows some places faring more poorly than others. In Jefferson and Franklin counties, median incomes fell more than 15 percent. But in St. Clair County, they barely fell at all.
As for the middle class, it’s shrinking. Twenty-six thousand fewer St. Louis-area households earned between $50,000 and $100,000 in 2011 than four years prior, according to the census estimates. Read more on St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
