Hy-Vee Challenging Wal-Mart In Springfield Grocery Market

The battle for Springfield’s grocery dollars is escalating.

Thursday, Springfield’s Planning and Zoning Commission will hear a rezoning request that would allow Hy-Vee to build an 86,000-square-foot grocery store — its second in the city — on East Sunshine Street.

Walmart, meanwhile, on Wednesday will open its third Neighborhood Market, a 42,000-square-foot grocery on El Camino Alto, near its Sam’s Club in James River Commons. A fourth market, near Mount Vernon Street and West Bypass, will open Oct. 17.
