Will Hockey Lockout Hurt the Peabody Opera House?

The news Friday that the NHL canceled the first two weeks of its season while players and owners spar over a new collective bargaining agreement came as bad news to fans and took a bite out of arena workers’ paychecks.

If the lockout drags on, it could also ding one of the crown jewels of redevelopment in downtown St. Louis: the Peabody Opera House.

Almost half of the funding for the $78 million renovation of the downtown concert hall – which is owned by the Blues – came from bonds that are being paid off by amusement tax revenue from the team’s home games. If there are no games, there’s no tax revenue, which could put the bonds at risk of default.
