While Sam’s Club officials set up a grand opening for a new 137,000-square-foot store near the Kansas Speedway this weekend, quiet plans surfaced for two additional stores on the other side of the state line.
The City Plan Commission heard from Sam’s Real Estate Business Trust at its Tuesday meeting about a proposal to bring a 136,280-square-foot big-box store and an adjoining gas station to an 18-acre site along Northeast 81st Terrace between Flintlock Road and North Church Road in Clay County near Interstate 35/Missouri Highway 152.
Diane Binckley, Kansas City’s development management division manager, said in an email that a similar proposal near Northwest Ambassador Drive and Old Tiffany Springs Road was expected to surface before the City Plan Commission in the coming weeks.
Sam’s Club stores are seen as big-dollar retail generators that not only spur adjacent retail development but tend to be relatively large employers for retail locations.
The newest Sam’s Club near the Kansas Speedway was expected to employ 175. Its grand opening is Thursday. Read more on Kansas City Business Journal.
