Sprint Deal Could Reduce Competitiveness, AT&T Warns

AT&T Inc. is urging regulators to take a close look at the implications of SoftBank Corp.’s plan to buy a majority stake in Overland Park-based Sprint Nextel Corp.

“SoftBank’s acquisition of Sprint and the control it gains over Clearwire will give one of Japan’s largest wireless companies control of significantly more U.S. wireless spectrum than any other company,” Brad Burns, AT&T vice president, said in  statement: “This is one more example of a very dynamic and competitive U.S. wireless marketplace, which is an important fact for U.S. regulators to recognize.”

When AT&T tried to buy T-Mobile USA Inc. last year, Sprint’s first reaction took a similar tone. Later, the Overland Park-based carrier later came out in opposition to the combination.
