Drury University in Springfield finally brought the search for its next president to an end with the announcement of David Manuel Wednesday morning. Manuel previously served as the chancellor at Louisiana State University-Alexandria, where he distinguished himself for his ability to raise funds and navigate difficult financial waters at a state school with the help of his master’s degree in economics. As the News-Leader points out, both of these skills stand to benefit Drury in the future:
When Manuel visited Drury Oct. 5 he mentioned the decline in state support of higher education in Louisiana. He said that when he started as chancellor in Alexandria 60 percent of the school’s revenue was state appropriations. The figure is now 40 percent.
Manuel’s fundraising skills will be put to the test at Drury, which is a private school and, therefore, more heavily reliant on tuition and private donations.
