Five Questions: Ameren’s Adam Heflin Talks About the Future of Nukes

Adam Heflin’s job as chief nuclear officer for Ameren Missouri largely revolves around the utility’s lone nuclear reactor — the 1,169-megawatt Callaway Energy Center outside of Fulton, Mo.

But these days, he and other senior managers for the St. Louis-based utility are also busy studying the potential for a second, albeit smaller unit at the same site. The first-of-its kind plant that would produce a fifth of the generating capacity and be constructed mostly in a factory.
