Propane Pardners has sold its propane operations to one of the top U.S. suppliers of the gas — MFA Oil Co. of Columbia, Mo.

The move came after member requests and consideration of possible deregulation in the electric utility market.

“The industry has changed for rural electric cooperatives, and we believe MFA is a good fit for the propane business,” Gene Dorrel, general manager of United Electric, said in a Monday release. “We believe that Propane Pardners customers will be pleased with the service and the economies of scale that MFA can provide.”

United Electric has 10,000 members across northwest Missouri, including in Buchanan, Caldwell, Clay, Clinton, DeKalb, Platte and Ray counties.

With 40,000 farmer members, MFA supplies fuels, lubricants and tires to states that include Kansas and Missouri. More than 100 retail operations are under the MFA brand, including Jiffy Lube and Big O Tires.
