Google Dropped KC Phone Service Idea After Examining Regulations

Google Inc. considered offering phone services with its ultra-fast Internet and TV packages in Kansas City, Mo., and Kansas City, Kan., but the company took a pass once it started doing some digging into federal and state regulations, a Google executive said.

Google mulled rolling out Voice-over-Internet Protocol, or VoIP, features to its new fiber network, which Google began lighting up last month, the vice president of Google Access Services said Monday. VoIP service combines voice and data into a single connection.
