Mississipi’s Infrastructure Limiting Shipping Industry, Agribusiness Leaders Say

Farmers and agribusiness leaders, brought together by the St. Louis AgriBusiness Club, said they could lose markets unless improvements are made to the Mississippi River’s crumbling system of locks and dams. With drought conditions pushing water levels toward historic lows, its deterioration is becoming more pronounced.

The low river levels are crippling barge traffic and jamming passage up and down the river. Chesterfield-based AEP River Operations, one of the nation’s largest barge operators, is already running at 50 percent capacity, because it can only partially load its barges.
