Is Dish Network Now Influencing Sprint-to-Softbank Purchase?

In the latest twist regarding Dish Network’s bid for Clearwire Corporation and its cell phone spectrum, the satellite TV provider asked the Federal Communications Commission to pause its consideration of Sprint Nextel’s $20 billion purchase by SoftBank Corporation. Sprint Nextel is currently Dish’s primary competitor for Clearwire and already owns a little more than half of the company.

Dish Network Chairman Charlie Ergen previously said he wants to acquire Clearwire’s spectrum in order to allow Dish to better compete with companies such as AT&T and Verizon in the wireless phone business. According to analyst Amy Yong, the move by Dish is a negotiating tactic to try and force Sprint into sharing airwaves.
