Granite City Cinema Drawing New Businesses Downtown

After a slow start in 2010, the Granite City Cinema is turning a steady profit. More importantly, officials say, the movie theater is serving as a magnet for further revitalization of the downtown area.

The presence of the three-year-old cinema in downtown Granite City, a southwestern Illinois town on the outskirts of St. Louis, already has helped two businesses take off across the street in renovated buildings. With the movie theater drawing traffic downtown, developers are attempting to build on the momentum, and economic development officials say rehabbed buildings downtown continue to attract interest from prospective tenants.
