Patriot Coal Bankruptcy Case Beginning, Miners Plan Protests

A federal judge today will convene the first St. Louis hearing in the bankruptcy of Patriot Coal Corp., a company spun off from Peabody five years ago that now claims it has “unsustainable labor-related legacy liabilities.” Active and retired coal miners and dependents are worried that health care and pension benefits could be stripped away during the Chapter 11 proceeding, and many of them planned to join street protests outside the courthouse.
