Ammunition Shortages Hit State’s Gun Shops

Gun shops in the state are changing how they do business due to a lack of available ammunition.

Firearm retailers say the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School and President Barack Obama’s gun-control initiative have led to increased demand for ammo. Top Gun, a gun shop in St. Louis, has limited sales of 9mm rounds for use at its range only. Metro Shooting gun shops in Bridgeton and Belleville have increased their prices by roughly 25 percent.

Fourth-quarter profit for the Clayton-based Olin Corp. increased 85 percent, driven by strong sales of ammunition to commercial, military and law enforcement customers, according to reports released Tuesday.
