Missouri Should Benefit As Congress Addresses Medicare Issue

Hospital officials in Missouri say they’re pleased that federal legislators are looking at correcting a problem that is costing hospitals in the Show-Me State an estimated $15.6 million a year in Medicare payments.

Massachusetts hospital officials used the way that hospitals are classified to funnel more money in Medicare payments to Massachusetts and eight other states at the expense of hospitals in the other 41 states — an extra $256.6 million to $367 million a year for the last two years.

U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., and U.S. Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., last month introduced a bill that would require states like Massachusetts to pay for the increased reimbursements themselves.
