Monsanto’s Patent Fight With Farmer Has Broad Implications

A dispute between an Indiana farmer and Monsanto Co. over soybean seeds has grown into a U.S. Supreme Court case that could have broad implications for the biotechnology industry.

Trade groups representing software firms such as Microsoft Corp. and Apple Inc. have filed briefs supporting Creve Coeur-based Monsanto, saying the ruling against the seed maker would “eviscerate” tech companies’ patent protection. The court will hear arguments in the case Tuesday.
