Supreme Court Hears Arguments Today In Landmark Monsanto Patent Fight

The Supreme Court’s hearing in the seed patent fight between an Indiana farmer and biotechnology giant Monsanto Co. has drawn the attention of the business world. Those supporting the Creve Coeur-based company, from the University of Missouri to Microsoft, say a decision for he farmer would have a massive chilling effect on innovation. The farmer’s supporters, including food advocacy, farmer and antitrust watchdog groups, contend that allowing patents to cover second-generation seeds would further consolidate the industry’s control over the seed market, leaving farmers fewer choices of suppliers and varieties, and leading to rising prices.
