St. Louis-Based Shriners To Build $47M Surgical Center

Fifty years after leaving St. Louis for Frontenac, Shriners Hospitals for Children is returning to the Central West End to build a three-story, $47 million surgical center.

Shriners officials announced Wednesday construction will begin March 20 on what will be a 12-bed hospital at 4400 Clayton Avenue. Construction is scheduled to take 20 months.

The new facility will be Shriners’ third in the St. Louis area. The first opened in 1924 in a building two blocks from the site of the new facility. In 1963, Shriners relocated the operation to 2001 South Lindbergh Blvd.
