Aging Boomers Drive Demand For Smaller Houses

A segment of the baby boomer population is on the hunt for smaller, more manageable housing, and that’s driving considerable business for some realtors in the St. Louis area.

The accepted wisdom in real estate is that lots of boomers will start moving to condos or smaller houses. Not all real estate agents are seeing it, but at least one St. Louis agency says downsizing boomers make up 50 percent of its business.

Boomers are helping drive a general move toward smaller houses in new construction, a trend that has grown as cash-strapped home-buyers purchased smaller, more affordable homes.
