Express Scripts Report Shows Prescription Drug Spending Decreased

For the first time in more than 20 years, there was a decrease last year in U.S. spending on traditional prescription drugs, according to new data released by St. Louis-based Express Scripts Holding Co., the country’s largest pharmacy benefit manager. U.S. spending on the medicines declined 1.5 percent in 2012 and remained nearly flat in 2010 and 2011. But the decline was offset by an 18.4 percent increase in spending last year on specialty medicines, often injected, that are used to treat complex diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and cancer.
