Led By Sprint’s Inventors, KC Area’s Patent Growth Doubles National Pace

The Kansas City area’s rank had been as low as 244, but it broke into the top 100 in 2011 and surged to 64 last year thanks to growth in patents, according to data from the Brookings Institution that compares an area’s patent production to its working population. Sprint Nextel Corp. had its best year for innovation, securing 618 new patents.

Technology-heavy firms like Garmin Ltd., Cerner Corp. and Honeywell International Inc. also regularly turn innovations into patents. Individuals who win patents on their own collectively trail only Sprint in the number of new patents awarded in the area each year.
