Missouri Chamber of Commerce Backs Medicaid Expansion

The Missouri Chamber of Commerce has endorsed Medicaid expansion after the release of a report detailing the “invisible tax” that would be shifted to consumers if expansion doesn’t go through.

Chamber president Dan Mehan held a news conference Wednesday morning urging the state to reconsider its opposition to expansion. He said if the state doesn’t opt in to Medicaid it would witness “a huge cost shift from the health care provider community to the payors, the providers of insurance, and that’s the employer community.”

According to the report, conducted by the Missouri Hospital Association, the cost of providing care to the state’s uninsured could nearly triple to $3.5 billion annually by 2019 if the state doesn’t expand its Medicaid program.
