Public Weighs In On Buyout Of Providence And St. John’s

Supporters and opponents laid out their cases Wednesday night on the proposed buyout of two Kansas City area hospitals.

At a public forum with Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt listening, board members of Providence Medical Center and St. John’s Hospital said they saw no alternative to selling the hospitals to Prime Healthcare, a California-based, for-profit company. They and other speakers cited the importance of maintaining hospital access to patients and preserving the many jobs the hospitals provide.

Opponents worried the sale of the nonprofit hospitals would hurt workers. They also noted that Prime is currently under federal investigation for overcharging Medicare and violating patient privacy.

Approval of the sale rests with Schmidt, who said his office will keep the public record open for comment through Friday.
