Region’s Manufacturing Remains Sluggish, KC Fed Index Shows

Manufacturing activity in the area remained sluggish in March, hampered by concerns about the economy’s slow growth and uncertainty over health care costs.

An index of manufacturing conditions released Thursday by the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City showed a reading of minus 5 in March, an improvement from minus 10 in February but a step back from minus 2 in January.

The index measures production, new orders, employment, raw materials inventory and supplier delivery time. It covers the Fed’s Tenth District, which includes Kansas, the western third of Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Wyoming, Colorado and northern New Mexico.
